Sokuzan visits with Kalamazoo Zen
We are blessed and honored to announce that Kyoun Sokuzan, head teacher at SokukoJi Buddhist Temple Monastery in Battle Creek, will be coming for one of his occasional visits to Kalamazoo. When he came this past Spring he held a brief Zen sitting meditation, spoke about some aspect of the Dharma and then held a Q&A session with those assemble.
The studio was pleasantly filled with new visitors, several of the Monday night Zen Sitting regulars and friends of Sanctuary and Sokukoji.

The Energy of Breath
With a focus on alignment, this slow-flow class aims to cultivate courage, strength, and self-awareness! Rather than focusing on how a posture or sequence of postures looks on the outside, students will be challenged to discover how to practice from the inside out.
Join us and get grounded from the inside out! All levels are welcome.

Root to Rise: Alignment Based Yoga
In this Vinyasa Flow class, where movement is synchronized with the breath, the focus is on building strength and flexibility, which in turn, frees the body to experience arm balancing and binding postures. The main objective of this class is to experience the peace that's found within our body, mind, and spirit through the ancient practice of yoga.
Fly Like Crows and Balance Like Eagles: Yoga for Strength and Flexibility
We find so few places to rest in our fast-paced, over-stimulated culture. Restorative Yoga creates a space to pause, find stillness, and slowly release tension without exertion and effort. This gentle, calming practice uses props to support the body as it softens and relaxes into a state of ease. As the body relaxes, so does the mind, allowing us to rest in our true nature with compassion and presence, and to leave feeling restored and rejuvenated.
This class is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners.

Please join Al Wolf for this Saturday Night Taoist Yoga (SNTY) series. The purpose of 'The Rehab Sessions' is to gently begin to get the body back in shape, begin to heal old injuries and stiffness, and start to regain your natural flexibility. You will stretch out your entire body to develop health, strength, fitness, and peacefulness. I will present using Yin and Yang Yoga, 5 Element Yoga and, over time, you will develop your own freestyle Yoga practice.
Taoist Yoga is a unique and user-friendly style of Yoga developed by Master Paulie Zink. This practice originated in China for health, healing, and survival. This is one of the essential practices to toughen, strengthen, loosen the body and heal chronic health conditions. This unique style of Yoga maximizes static and moving postures with breathing and polarity (mind) practice. Taoist Yoga is the basic conditioning for athletes, martial artists, and couch potatoes.

Course facilitator Dr. Cathryn Bailey: Since earning her PhD in philosophy in 1994, Cathryn Bailey has been passionately curious about Buddhism and the power of meditation. Across her decades of university experience, both Cathryn’s teaching and writing have emphasized the connections between self-reflection, intentional choices, and compassion for oneself and others, especially for women. In recent years, Cathryn has been especially interested in the power of spiritual experience to transform women’s relationship to aging, illness, and mortality. Ultimately, her aim is a practical one, to digest, create, and share concepts and practices that can serve as tools for real women facing real life challenges.

How do the stories we believe about aging and about ourselves shape our hopes and fears for the future?
How can simple mindfulness techniques help us more intentionally embrace the uncertain days to come?
Each week we will touch on material by teachers such as Pema Chodron, Maya Angelou, Tara Brach and Jon Kabat-Zinn.
Note, for this course pre-registration is required -- sorry, no drop-ins. Signup at Sanctuary Yoga or contact Cathryn via email at bailey.cathryn@gmail.com to register or for more information.

Sadhana Class
Sadhana is a sanskrit word translating to " a means of realization, an act performed with intention and awareness". During this introspective 45 minutes we will explore ways of practicing Sadhana and begin the embodiment of Sadhana awareness in everyday life. When we move through our days with more awareness around the "why we are doing what we are doing" there is more availability to "be" in the process of our activity.
This class is meant to be deeply enriching~ it precedes my Midweek Flow and Unwind class purposefully. When we create intention with Sadhana our Yoga practice and/or whatever we move into next holds the opportunity for more succulence and efficacy. Please join for a deep practice~ priming the joy that resides in the depths of your 'being'.
You may like to have a special Sadhana Journal to bring with you each week.
And again, please do consider staying for the Midweek Flow and Unwind class that follows if your schedule allows (see the description below).
